Gmail read receipts: how to tell if your email was opened

Personal Gmail or Google Workspace? Find the right way to check email activity, and understand what a receipt can actually tell you.

An open envelope in a blue inbox tray connects an orange receipt badge to three activity markers.

You sent a proposal, an interview follow-up, or a question that needs a decision. Gmail shows the message in Sent, but the conversation has gone quiet. Before you send another email, it helps to understand the difference between sending a message, loading it, and getting an answer.

This guide walks through native Gmail receipts, a practical tracking workflow, and the limitations that matter when deciding what to do next. Choose the method that fits your account and the relationship, rather than assuming every email should come with a read confirmation.

Does your Gmail account support read receipts?

Google’s read receipt instructions restrict the feature to eligible work or school accounts. Personal @gmail.com accounts do not have this native option. For a managed account, ask your administrator whether receipts are enabled and which recipients are allowed.

A custom email address alone does not establish eligibility. If the option is missing, verify the account and administrator settings before spending time troubleshooting your browser.

How to request a read receipt in Gmail

  1. Open Gmail on a computer using your eligible account.

  2. Compose the message and make the requested action clear.

  3. Open More options at the bottom of the compose window and select Request read receipt.

  4. Send the email. If a receipt is returned, it arrives as another email.

Google notes that some recipients must approve receipts, and some email clients do not return them. A missing receipt is therefore an unresolved signal. Give the recipient an appropriate amount of time and use the original deadline or your shared expectations to decide when to follow up.

How to check activity with an email tracker

An email tracker adds a message-specific remote image before the email is sent. When a mail client or another system requests it, the tracking service receives an activity signal. This works differently from asking the recipient’s email client to return a native receipt. Read how email tracking works for a fuller explanation.

With Elite Email Tracker, start with a supported inbox and install the appropriate extension or add-in. Send a test message to a separate inbox you control, open it there, and compare the timeline with your test. The first tracked email guide covers setup.

  • Confirm that tracking is enabled before sending.
  • Send one message to one recipient when individual attribution matters.
  • Look at likely-human activity alongside privacy-proxy, scanner, and unknown signals.
  • Use a reply or a qualified link click to add context to an open.

For a message with several To, Cc, or Bcc recipients sharing one body, a tracking image cannot reliably identify which person triggered the request. Use individualized campaign deliveries when separate recipient activity is important.

What an open can and cannot tell you

A reported open is evidence of an image request, subject to the tracker’s classification. Images can be blocked, prefetched, or cached. Apple Mail Privacy Protection can privately download remote content in the background, so a fetch need not coincide with the person reading the email.

Elite separates likely-human activity from privacy proxies, scanners, self activity, and unknown signals in its reporting. Classification helps interpret the evidence; it does not remove the uncertainty inherent in email tracking. A recipient can also read the text without loading any images.

Avoid saying ‘I saw you read this’ in a follow-up. It makes an uncertain signal sound conclusive and places the focus on monitoring rather than the recipient’s needs. A more useful message mentions the project, provides a missing detail, and offers a small next step.

Turn the signal into a useful follow-up

Start with the commitment you already made. If you promised to check back next week, an open today does not require an immediate interruption. If a decision is due tomorrow, a polite reminder can be useful even with no recorded open.

A clear confirmation request

SubjectUpdated proposal for [project]

Hi [name], I’m following up on the revised proposal I sent on [day]. The main change is [one useful detail]. Could you confirm whether it reached you, and whether [specific next step] works for your team? Thanks, [your name]

Save the follow-up date when you send the first message. You can use a reminder to keep the conversation visible without automatically sending another email. For more situations, try our follow-up email templates.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get read receipts in free Gmail?

Personal @gmail.com accounts do not support Gmail’s built-in read receipts. You can ask for a reply or use a supported email tracker, while remembering that tracking signals do not prove reading.

Can I track an email after sending it?

If the message was sent without a receipt request or tracking mechanism, you cannot add one retroactively or recover past opens. Send a direct follow-up if confirmation matters.

Why did I receive no receipt?

The recipient may not have approved it, their email client may not return it, or your organization may restrict receipts. No receipt alone does not establish non-delivery or non-reading.
