Email open tracking
Learn how tracking images, hidden pixels, signature images, unique opens, and message scope work.
How it works
Open tracking embeds one opaque, message-specific remote image URL in an HTML email. When a mail client, privacy service, or gateway requests that image, Elite records a raw signal and classifies it. The recipient's email address is not placed in the public URL.
Two image modes are available:
- Hidden pixel embeds an invisible 1×1 image. It is discreet and the default, but some gateways strip hidden images.
- My signature image inserts your default Elite signature and serves its logo through the tracking route. A meaningful content image can survive “download pictures” behavior more reliably, but it visibly adds the signature and requires a saved signature with a logo.
Only one tracking image mode is embedded. Signature mode does not add a second hidden pixel.
What counts as an open
The raw image request is classified before it contributes to likely-open KPIs. Likely-human opens count toward likely-open rate and follow-up intelligence. Privacy proxies, scanners, self activity, and unknown signals remain visible in signal-quality reporting but do not silently inflate that KPI.
Repeated requests may be grouped into unique activity, while the detailed timeline can retain more than one signal. Caching can prevent later opens from generating a new request; a proxy may also fetch once before the person reads.
Images blocked
If the recipient blocks remote images, no pixel technique can force a request. A likely-human tracked-link click or a reply still provides engagement evidence. Elite may record an implied open from a classified human click so message-level reporting reflects that the email was necessarily accessed, while retaining implied by click as the reason.
One recipient versus several
A one-recipient email has recipient-scoped tracking. An ordinary To/Cc/Bcc message sent as one MIME body has a group-scoped tracker. The group event means “one of these recipients or an automated system fetched it”; it cannot name which recipient.
Use a campaign when exact recipient-level results matter. Campaigns create individualized deliveries and preserve normal suppression, reply-stop, and opt-out behavior.
Tracking status versus delivery status
An open is not proof of provider delivery, and a lack of opens is not proof of non-delivery. Connected providers can supply separate send confirmation or error status. Delivery, image loading, reading, clicking, and replying are different events and should be interpreted separately.
