Can I track a plain-text email?

The quick answer

A plain-text message cannot contain the remote HTML image used for open tracking or the same rewritten HTML-link behavior. Use rich text for those features, or keep the message plain text with tracking disabled.

Use a compatible message format

  1. Check compose mode

    Open the inbox compose menu and check whether Plain text mode is selected. An open-tracking image requires a rich-text/HTML message.

  2. Choose the intended behavior

    Use rich text if you want a tracking image and rewritten HTML links. Keep plain text and disable tracking for that message when plain text is your requirement.

  3. Start a fresh message

    After changing the format, open a new compose window and check the controls before sending.

  4. Verify separately

    Use a separate mailbox and check the event classification. Plain text cannot be made pixel-trackable by installing another browser extension.
